A study of the mucosal Merkel cells from 10 patients showed that the cell contained an intranuclear rodlet, clear cell qualities, fine desmosomes, characteristic membrane-bound Merkel granules, and cellular "horns" and had a close relationship to terminal axons. The Merkel cell is an intraepithelial cell with features of neurons and of amine-storage cells.

A polyurethane elastomer was microbiologically evaluated in vitro for its potential use in resilient denture liners. Specimens were immersed in suspensions of ten selected oral microorganisms; this was followed by viable cell counts at intervals during a 16-week period. Results indicated that the polyurethane neither supported the growth of the organisms nor was it degraded.

The morphology and quantity of neural elements in 109 tissue specimens of gingiva and edentulous mucosa were studied by the cholinesterase whole-mount technique. The microscopic findings were compared on the basis of morphology, sex and age of patient, location of the biopsy site in the mouth, edentulous state and time, and the presence of a prosthesis.
