The mononegaviral family Filoviridae has eight members assigned to three genera and seven species. Until now, genus and species demarcation were based on arbitrarily chosen filovirus genome sequence divergence values (≈50% for genera, ≈30% for species) and arbitrarily chosen phenotypic virus or virion characteristics. Here we report filovirus genome sequence-based taxon demarcation criteria using the publicly accessible PAirwise Sequencing Comparison (PASC) tool of the US National Center for Biotechnology Information (Bethesda, MD, USA). Comparison of all available filovirus genomes in GenBank using PASC revealed optimal genus demarcation at the 55–58% sequence diversity threshold range for genera and at the 23–36% sequence diversity threshold range for species. Because these thresholds do not change the current official filovirus classification, these values are now implemented as filovirus taxon demarcation criteria that may solely be used for filovirus classification in case additional data are absent. A near-complete, coding-complete, or complete filovirus genome sequence will now be required to allow official classification of any novel “filovirus.” Classification of filoviruses into existing taxa or determining the need for novel taxa is now straightforward and could even become automated using a presented algorithm/flowchart rooted in RefSeq (type) sequences.

AbstractBackgroundKeratosis pilaris rubra is a common but rarely reported condition characterized by follicular‐based hyperkeratotic papules on a background of erythema. It can be embarrassing and symptomatic for patients, particularly adolescent boys. We sought to explore the efficacy of pulsed dye laser (PDL) in the treatment of keratosis pilaris rubra.MethodsEight patients were treated with PDL for keratosis pilaris rubra.ResultsAll patients reported noticeable improvement after one to four treatments.ConclusionsPDL is an effective, easily accessible, and underused therapy in the treatment of keratosis pilaris rubra.

We describe a case of a 73-year-old man who presented with right-sided abdominal pain associated with palpable mass. Initial laboratory examination was normal except lactate dehydrogenase level. Subsequent CT image showed situs inversus and splenic mass with multiple lymph nodes enlargement. Biopsy taken from the splenic mass demonstrated mantle cell lymphoma. Staging CT examination was performed with intravenous contrast, and patient developed altered mental status, respiratory failure and acute kidney injury requiring intensive care unit care. Laboratory examination revealed hyperuricaemia, hyperphosphataemia, hyperkalaemia and hypocalcaemia, which are consistent with spontaneous tumour lysis syndrome. The patient was successfully treated with rasburicase and haemodialysis, and completed the first course of chemotherapy without further complications.

No particular regimen is considered standard therapy for widespread metastatic melanoma, although surgery is the primary choice for regional nodal metastases. Systemic interleukin-2 (IL-2) is an effective immunotherapy for melanoma, but standard doses are associated with severe toxicity. We report a patient who was treated with intralesional low-dose IL-2 and V-beam pulsed dye laser for the treatment of scalp melanoma metastases. This treatment resulted in rapid regression of metastatic tumors with limited adverse effects.

Indicator-dilution curves were recorded by oximeters at the ears and the right radial artery following the injection of Evans blue (T 1824) into the superior vena cava and pulmonary arteries of 37 subjects who had no evidence of cardiovascular disease. The variability and ranges of various time and concentration components of these dilution curves are presented. These values can be used as standards of reference in the interpretation of abnormal dilution curves. Some of the factors responsible for the variability of these values in healthy subjects are assessed and discussed.
Dye Dilution Curves in Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease

Use of cuvette and earpiece oximeters facilitates the recording of the immediate dilution pattern of the dye T-1824 (Evans blue) in the arterial blood. In patients with venoarterial shunts the pattern of the dilution curves differs from normal. Quantitative analysis of such curves from patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease has been undertaken to establish the proportion of blood which bypassed the pulmonary circulation. The results obtained have been compared with estimates of the volume of the shunt from cardiac catheterization data and related to the arterial oxygen saturation.
