Abstract: The current workforce in the United States is rapidly changing and is increasingly inclusive of individuals from a broad range of ages, ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds. Engaging and leading a diverse workforce creates great opportunities for innovation and adaptation in our evolving medical economic and clinical care delivery environment. For optimal engagement of employees and partners, orthopaedic surgeons must develop the necessary skills for executing change inside complex organizations and across teams composed of a variety of providers and skilled workers. Important skills include leadership, effective communication, and negotiation within an ever-changing employee milieu. Understanding generalizable differences between age-based generations can increase the effectiveness of one’s strategies to execute change and increase organizational performance. One of the greatest impediments to effective communication and negotiations that all leaders face is unconscious bias. For leaders, even the tiniest unconscious biases have an outsized impact. Common domains that harbor unconscious bias include sex, race, and ethnicity. Addressing unconscious bias begins with developing awareness and then deploying various tactics that might include equity in compensation, promotion, and “being heard.” Effective negotiation skills also are essential to lead a diverse workforce and develop a successful organization. The most basic goal in any negotiation should be to establish a relationship (or deepen an existing relationship) while seeking an agreement that provides win-win opportunities for all parties. To effectively achieve a win-win scenario, leaders must recognize and address their tendency to interpret others’ behaviors, values, and beliefs through the lens of their own beliefs and experiences. Finally, and fortunately, there is a set of leader attributes that transcends the generational differences and diversity that is encountered in the workplace. These attributes include integrity, credibility, effective listening, having a vision of your destination, fairness, humility, and caring.

AbstractTo investigate the effect of sustained bone morphogenetic protein‐2 (BMP‐2) release kinetics on bone formation in poly(propylene fumarate) (PPF) scaffolds, different poly(lactic‐co‐glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres were used as delivery vehicles. All PPF scaffolds had the same 75% porous structure, while the degradation rate of the embedded PLGA microspheres was changed to tailor BMP‐2 release by varying the lactic‐to‐glycolic acid (L:G) ratio in the copolymer. Four PLGA microsphere formulations with 50/50, 65/35, 75/25, and 85/15 L:G ratios and varying in vivo degradation rates were fabricated. The in vitro and in vivo BMP‐2 release kinetics were determined by analyzing radiolabeled 125I‐BMP‐2. Biological activity of released BMP‐2 was tested using a W20‐17 cell culture model in vitro and a subcutaneous rat model in vivo. Corresponding outcome parameters were defined as capacity to increase the in vitro AP activity in weekly consecutive cell cultures over 14 weeks and the in vivo bone formation after 7 and 14 weeks. The PLGA/PPF composites showed similar biological activity and BMP‐2 release profiles in vitro. In vivo, PPF/PLGA 85:15 composite released significantly less BMP‐2 per time point in the first weeks. Micro‐CT and histological analysis after 7 and 14 weeks of implantation showed bone formation, which significantly increased over time for all composites. No significant differences were seen between the composites. Overall, the results of this study show that small differences in BMP‐2 sustained release had no significant effect on BMP‐2 osteogenic efficacy in PPF/PLGA composites. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABSTRACTOsteosarcoma is a bone tumor that mainly affects children and adolescents. Although its pathogenesis is still not fully understood, activation of Wnt signaling has been implicated in the development and metastasis of osteosarcoma. In this report, we have investigated the effect of the anti‐tumor compound, 2‐methoxyestradiol (2‐ME) on Wnt antagonist frizzled‐related protein b (Frzb), also known as secreted frizzled‐related protein (sFRP)3 in human osteosarcoma (MG63) cells. Our results show that 2‐ME treatment induces Frzb gene promoter activity, and increases Frzb mRNA and protein levels in osteosarcoma cells. In addition, 2‐ME treatment regulates downstream Wnt signaling, increasing the cytoplasmic levels of β‐catenin, and blocking β‐catenin‐mediated Wnt activation in osteosarcoma cells. 2‐ME‐mediated induction of Frzb protein expression is specific to osteosarcoma cells, as it does not affect Frzb expression in normal primary human osteoblasts. Furthermore, 2‐ME‐induced apoptosis and autophagy are blocked in osteosarcoma cells transfected with Frzb siRNAs. Taken together, these studies demonstrate that Frzb protein plays an important role in 2‐ME‐mediated anti‐tumor mechanisms in osteosarcoma cells. J. Cell.
